The Story Behind Angel
2020 was filled with so much confusion, fear and misinformation. For me, it was difficult to know what was true and what was exaggerated by the media. The thing that became clear to me was the consistent message that our planet was suffering. While we fought and bickered over ownership of land, politics and health, Mother Nature was ravaged by storm, wildfire and disintegration.
I wrote the song without any effort. I simply expressed my sadness and my optimism for renewal in a musical way, and it just kind of rolled out.
For years, I was looking for a song to use the talents of my gifted guitar player and friend Sean Kantrowitz. I called him, and we exchanged some tracks back and forth but nothing really sparked. When I sent him Angel, I told him I needed two things: tension (a one-note wiggle) and an army of angels to bring the message of hope at the end of the song. He did both things so brilliantly, I used his first takes on all the tracks. He understood exactly what I was feeling, and added just the right touch.
I am not a filmmaker, but 2020 forced all of us to learn new software and try a DIY version. The creation of this video was an unexpected inspiration. I wanted to find a film maker to use the song or collaborate with me on a message of urgency to take action against global warming. I wanted to highlight the champions of our time and support their lifetimes of work (Vandana Shiva, Robert Kennedy Jr, et al). It turned out differently than I thought!
I asked some friends for heart images from nature for the chorus "nothing to do but still my heart" - I knew just the right people to ask! Leila Swenson is a longtime collector of heart images, as is Amber Murphy. They both sent their images of hearts and I started blocking out the sections of the film. I had remnants from a previous project by Maren Elwood, a filmmaker from Monterrey, who had created "mother & child" footage for one of my previous projects. I used the footage as a marker, so the "filmmaker would know which section to replace" but when I started viewing it, I was deeply moved by its message. Women and mothers who want to preserve Mother Nature for their children will be the biggest and most effective asset to help change the world. As a mother myself, I feel strongly about loving and caring for this Earth and my children.
I share my film, however amateur it is, to get my message out there. I hope a real filmmaker will come along and share my vision. We are co-creating this new partnership with each other and the planet.
My mix engineer for this song was Seva at Sequoyah Studios in Knoxville, TN. As fate would have it, I recorded and mixed my first CD (Transformation in 1997!) at this very studio. He purchased an renamed it in 2017. Working long-distance was not ideal, but it worked because Seva knows my music so well and knows my musical "brand." His talent and expertise was a huge boost to this project. And a big thanks to Edward Edwards at The Orchard for helping to get this Single out quickly to all the digital streaming platforms.
Thank you for reading! Thank you for buying, liking, sharing and streaming the music!
I look forward to meeting you and connecting. Jai ma,
