The Story Behind Angel
I thought the Covid Lockdown would last a couple months. But 2020 ended up being a long road of awakening. I wrote Here to the Future to reflect on what got us into this current economic breakdown, health breakdown, communication breakdown, overall societal meltdown.
The first version of this song, Here to the Future, was written in 2001, or sometime around then. I had just started performing with my band in Los Angeles and I wrote a lot of songs to establish a repertoire we could perform.
The song never made it onto an album. It was not really accepted by the audience (why was I talking about getting to the future? that didn't seem like a hard thing to do, just wake up tomorrow), perhaps the song was just ahead of its time. I was wondering how we create the dream that started in the 1960's. I was 8 years old when I went to a Martin Luther King march with my Dad. I felt passionately about racial equality and other social and political issues.
It might not have been the right song in 2001, but it definitely was the right song in 2020. I tweaked the lyrics, changed some chords in the bridge, and started performing it. It spoke to the times.
My mix engineer for this song was Seva at Sequoyah Studios in Knoxville, TN. As fate would have it, I recorded and mixed my first CD (Transformation in 1997!) at this very studio. He purchased an renamed it in 2017. Working long-distance was not ideal, but it worked because Seva knows my music so well and knows my musical "brand." His talent and expertise was a huge boost to this project. And a big thanks to Edward Edwards at The Orchard for helping to get this Single out quickly to all the digital streaming platforms.
Thank you for reading! Thank you for buying, liking, sharing and streaming the music!
I look forward to meeting you and connecting. Jai ma,
Wah!
